  • NY Investigating Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision for Slow Internet Speeds


    According to Reuters, official letters were sent out executives of Verizon, Cablevision and Time Warner Cable, probing claims that the three Internet service providers (ISPs) aren’t living up to the speeds they advertise to subscribers. It was attorney general Eric Schneiderman that confirmed the probe in a statement.

    The folks over at Verizon claimed they hadn’t even seen the letter but the probe was acknowledged by spokesmen from both TWC and Cablevision. Not only did TWC and Cablevision argue that their companies met these promises, Charlie Schueler from Cablevision went as far as stating that his company’s Optimum Online service “consistently surpasses” marketed speeds, beating them in internal tests and ones run by the Federal Communications Commission.

    Prior to sending out these notices, Schneiderman’s office referenced a 2014 M-Lab study, which found that connections tended to deteriorate at points where ISPs linked with so-called “long-haul” Internet carriers such as Cogent. This probe was also fueled by several complaints and internal analysis from the public.

    Generally speaking, ISPs in the United States have regularly been accused of failing to match the promised bandwidth. Though it is a possibility that connection quality can be limited by factors such as location and the existing infrastructure, the issue has seemingly become more serious as of late, as there continues to be a growing dependence on Internet for professional and personal reasons.

      I saw a steady decline in speeds when I was with Comcast. Originally we had ~24mbs upon installation. 1 year later we had ~12mbs. But has anyone else ever tried complaining to Comcast? You'll get nowhere.

      Time Warner does good by me with a wide band connection in NY. It is always at or slightly above the expected speed.

      This took way too long. For months the speeds have been dropping and it's reached the point where the connection itself completely cuts out and the router can't connect at all. I thought it might have just been my router, but living between multiple homes in different towns I quickly realized it wasn't isolated. **** you TWC and thank you FCC for finally looking into this.

      I'm with Comcast and I always get top notch speeds, even during the busy times! Every 1-2 years when my contract is up I call and get whatever promo they have running for new customers without any problems! I'm definitely going to be staying with them and recommending them to others if they're available in the area! (Not a Comcast employee, I promise )
