  • Chase Decides to Compete With Apple Pay by Launching 'Chase Pay'

As Apple is growing its wireless payment service, Apple Pay, in the U.S. and internationally, JPMorgan Chase & Co announces that they will be releasing their own payment service. According to Re/code, ‘Chase Pay’ was announced at the Las Vegas Money20/20 payments conference. Unlike Apple Pay, Chase Pay will not work over NFC and will work via QR code instead. Partnering with MCX, customers using Chase Pay will have to show a QR code to the cashier. This is very similar to the CurrentC payment system.

Chase CEO of Consumer and Community Banking, Gordon Smith, noted that Chase Pay will be directly competing against Apple Pay. Currently, retailers including Target, Sears, Michaels, Walmart, Kohl’s, and more are set up to support CurrentC so when it becomes available, Chase Pay will also work at these retailers. Both CurrentC and Chase Pay have been noted to launch next year some time, although exact dates were not given.

What’s strange is the fact that Chase debit and credit cards are supported by Apple Pay, but now they have plans to compete directly with Apple’s wireless payment system. If you ask us, not only is it a bit confusing but going against themselves too, don’t you think? What are your thoughts on this? Share with us in the section below.

Yeah that is super weird...I have my Chase Card setup in Apple Pay and love using it. So I don't understand why Chase is putting out their own payment method to compete with...themselves...? No way I would ever use the QR Code method so I hope Chase stays with AP.

As I do also (have my Chase Credit Card set up with Apple pay), feel the same about QR too unless I'm missing something.
