  • iFixit Tears Into Apple's New Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2, and Magic Track Pad 2

Just this week alongside the new lineup of retina display iMacs, Apple also launched new Mac accessories, including the Magic Mouse 2, Magic Track Pad 2, and Magic Keyboard. The new accessories were a big upgrade from the previous generation being that they all use a new iPhone-like lithium-ion battery instead of disposable batteries, and are charged with the same Lightning sync cable as your iOS devices.

The team over at iFixit has just got their hands on all three of the devices, and as you might expect, they've torn them down to reveal all the internals.

Starting with the Magic Keyboard, iFixit notes that the keyboard takes on the scissor key design that Apple created for the 2015 MacBook, which reduces key travel and make the keyboard feel stiffer. Also included is a Bluetooth 3.0 controller, and a 3.76 V, 2.98 Wh battery. The Smart Keyboard received a 3 out of 10 repairability score due to all the adhesive holding it together:

In terms of the Magic Mouse 2, iFixit has discovered a cute mouse-shaped logic board with a Bluetooth 3.0 controller and a 3.76 V, 7.28 Wh, 1986 mAh lithium-ion battery. The Smart Mouse 2 received a not-so-smart 2 out of 10 repairability score due to all of the adhesive and difficulty opening the device. Some soldering might even be required to replace some parts inside:

And in the case of the Magic Track Pad 2, iFixit finds a 3.78 V, 7.65 Whr, this 2024 mAh lithium-ion battery, Bluetooth 3.0 controller, and a taptic engine just like the one in the modern MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The Smart Track Pad 2 has received a 3 out of 10 repairability score for the same reasons as the above: lots of adhesive and difficulty removing intricate parts:

Did they tear it down enough to justify the $129 Magic Pad price tag?? haha!
