  • AT&T Begins Rolling Out Wi-Fi Calling for Some Subscribers

    After a week of drama from AT&T and the FCC about enabling Wi-Fi calling for its subscribers, AT&T appears to finally be starting to roll the feature out. The carrier delayed its launch as it waited for the FCC to approve a waiver to not have to support (teletypewriter) technology, and instead, wanted to use RTT (real-time text) technology.

    AT&T has blasted T-Mobile and Sprint for rolling the Wi-Fi calling feature out to subscribers prematurely before AT&T since AT&T was choosing to 'play by the rules' and wait for the waver, and implies that the two carriers should be penalized for not following the rules, but the FCC doesn't seem too concerned. It looks more like AT&T is acting out of spite from the fact that the carrier was was busted for throttling unlimited data users too prematurely and the FCC didn't like it.

    Nonetheless, AT&T customers can try to enable the feature on their iPhones from Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi calling. You will need to sign in with your AT&T account to get started. Some people are reporting success activating the feature, while others are still coming up with a message saying that the feature could not be enabled at this time. This is because AT&T is rolling the feature out and hasn't gotten to everybody just yet, so it's recommended you just give it some time if you're unable to activate the feature.

    Wi-Fi calling will be useful in places where your signal strength is low and you have access to Wi-Fi. It gives the user the ability to essentially make VoIP calls and stay in touch even when in metal buildings or low reception areas.

    Are you able to activate Wi-Fi calling on your AT&T iPhone?

      Will it work if you travel outside the US to another country in where you can connect to wifi?
      I think TMobile allows this.

      I just read this somewhere else;

      Wi-Fi calling can be used for voice calls within the United States, Puerto Rico, and United States Virgin Islands at no charge. Long distance global voice calls will be charged standard long distance rates.

      That sucks. Last year I was traveling the Caribbean using TMobile on Android and it worked for free. Had to leave my iphone home. And what about Europe, Asia, etc.

      It sounds like it will on 8 or 9 depending on a few variables, like carrier and model of iOS device, and what type of WiFi calling.

      For phone to truly make a WiFi call with "continuity", I believe you do need iOS 9 with an iPhone 5S and above.

      My wife is on iOS 8.1 but there's no wifi calling so looks like is only for iOS 9.

      Don't know if it was coincidence or not, but after turning mine on, my phone started getting hot. When I noticed, I turned it off again and phone went back to normal.

      According to AT&T chat support.

      "Charlene-S: At this time the Wi-Fi calling is not available for anything below the iPhone6. We are waiting for FCC to release the feature to additional phone."

      I have an iPhone 5s model ME341LL/A with a Carrier version AT&T 21.0.1 and this option does not even show up in my phone settings.

      The phone redirected to the ATT site when I flipped the switch. A minute later it was on and working here in L.A.
