  • Jimmy Iovine Has No Interest in Free Ad-Based Tier For Apple Music

As the three-month trial version of Apple Music just recently ended, consumers had to start subscribing monthly in order to continue using the service. According to Jimmy Iovine, Apple has no plans or desires to add a free-ad based tier to Apple Music. Iovine called free streaming services with ad-support a ‘shell game,’ and noted at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit in California that free music supported by advertisements are "building an audience on the back of the artists.

Apple said as of August, they have 11 million users on Apple Music and Iovine said that it would increase to 500 million if there was a free tier. However, he has no plans of doing that and doesn’t want to add that to the service. He believes the streaming music service has a powerful foundation and strong enough that it will be successful even without free tunes. Apple Music is very much like Beats Music, where neither offered free music and consumers had to pay every month.

Akshay, the three month trial of apple music has not ended. It only ended for people who signed up for the trial 3 months ago. My trial ends Jan 2.

Most people are on iOS 8 or above, and most who had any interest in streaming already signed up for the trial. For those people, myself included, the trial has indeed come to an end. You are one of the few, not the one of the many.

Regardless, the statement that Akshay said is incorrect.

Incorrect for YOU and a small handful of others. However, very correct for the mass majority of users.

I haven't started my trial yet. I keep forgetting to start it.

"As the three-month trial version of Apple Music just recently ended" is an incorrect statement.
