  • Apple and Samsung Announce an Agreement to Participate in Mediation Over Patent Issues

In a recently filed joint statement to a California district court, Apple and Samsung announced an agreement to participate in court-supervised mediation for their long patent dispute which has been running for several years. The attorneys representing Apple and Samsung said in an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) statement that they are willing to enter mediation talks covering settlement terms relating to the first Apple vs. Samsung trial. Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero is set to preside over the discussions in November. This decision to mediate the trial comes as presiding Judge Lucy Koh enters the casesí second damages retrial which is tentatively scheduled to take place at the end of Q1 2016.

For those of you who didnít know, Apple is currently fighting for a total $548 million in damages connected to its first court win, a sum which has been gone down after several retrials and successful appeals from Samsung.

This isnít the first time that the Apple and Samsung CEOs have agreed to a court-supervised mediation either. In the past before the first jury trial in 2012 and then again before the second trial in 2014, both CEOs attempted to come to a solution. Unfortunately for each, both meetings fell short of achieving a resolution regarding the situation.

Weíll have to wait and see what comes of this whole ordeal.
