  • New Report Claims Second-Gen Apple Watch to be Released Mid-to-Late 2016

According to a Cowen and Company research memo, a second-gen Apple Watch is predicted no earlier than mid-2016 and is likely to feature a thinner size and better performance. The information was reportedly based off of a research memo based on a recent tour of Asian suppliers. The Cowen forecast calls for Apple to ship roughly 18 million Watches by the end of 2015 but at least 45 million in 2016 according to analyst Timothy Arcuri. He claims that next year’s figures may be too pessimistic based on the strength of the data from 2015.

The original Apple Watch shipped out on April 24th earlier this year. If the predictions from Cowen and Company turn out to be true, Apple’s next-gen model would likely arrive sometime in May, June or perhaps even later. As of right now, it’s unclear whether Cowen’s claims about the device are purely speculative or whether they are in fact based on research conducted while abroad. There haven’t been too many rumors about a second-gen Apple Watch up until now aside from the mention of a next-gen watch having a similar external design with the addition of a larger battery.

Generally speaking, Apple tends to sacrifice potential battery gains for thinner and sleeker designs but it may be inclined to meet the demand for a wearable that can last 24 hours or more on a single charge. A quick look at the market in its current form will point out that few major smartwatches can reliably run more than that and even then, these models rely on technologies like e-ink or disposable battery to hit that goal.

Apple Watch aside, based on its trip report, Cowen and Company separately estimated that 40 million iPhone shipments will go out for the September quarter of 2015. It also called for fourth quarter shipments to reach roughly the mid-70 million range.

We’ll have to wait and see how accurate this speculation turns out to be.

Depending on, I might consider that one. Just not worth it over what my Garmin Vivosmart gives me at the moment.

I held out on 1st gen but pretty sure I'll get the 2nd gen. I'm just hoping for an improved battery and a round piece as an option. I know it's not an easy task but I just feel that a smart watch under normal usage should last 3+ days on single charge. And by normal use I don't mean GPS tracking for running, playing games etc. I mean I'm just wearing it, check notifications and respond to some text messages when my phone isn't near by.
