  • Meet iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

Apple CEO Tim Cook calls them the most advanced iPhones ever. In fact, he even went one step further, calling them the most advanced smartphones in the world.

He's referring, of course, to the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. And Phil Schiller returned to the stage to do the deed and show us what's new with iPhone.

First up, a new rose gold finish, joining the familiar gold, white and space grey finishes.

Next, is 3D Touch (force touch). This is the next generation of multi-touch. In addition to recognizing familiar gestures, it recognizes force touch. For example, "Peek and Pop." If you press the screen lightly, you'll get a "peek" at the content you're trying to preview. If you continue to press, you will be brought directly to the entire content.

The engineering behind the haptic feedback of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is immensely elaborate, we're told. The end result is the most responsive smartphone ever devised by Apple, taking sense detection and control to an unprecedented level.

3D touch, Craig Federighi subsequently explained, is as you might have guessed integrated into iOS 9.

Apple's new flagship iPhones, and their console-class GPU, pack a blazing-fast A9 chip, which puts the A8 to shame. The most advanced chip ever in a smartphone is being billed as one of the defining strengths of the refreshed iPhone lineup.

There's a second-gen Touch ID sensor which recognizes finger prints faster than ever. There's also a new camera. The iSight 12MP camera captures 50% more pixels than before. Using what Steve Schiller called Deep Trench technology, the color and image clarity/detail of photos taken by iPhone 6s is stunning and remarkably free of noise based on the photos used in today's demo. Particularly striking is the technology behind "Live Photos," which animates photos through a 3D touch to capture and play a short video to help users remember the moment when their photos were taken.

The camera even makes it possible to capture breathtaking 4K video.

For those wanting better selfies, there's a new 5PM FaceTime front facing camera that comes with "truetone flash" for improved color and overall clarity.

Apple says the new iPhone 6s models will be available in the same prices/configurations as the previous generation iPhone 6. For example, the iPhone 6s starts at $199. iPhone 6s Plus starts at $299. Preorders begin next Saturday with shipments two weeks out.

iOS 9 will become available September 16th.

I can not believe they stuck with 16gb entry level phone. Notice they were quick to try to sell that iCloud storage.

The price of icloud is great, but they really need at least another 5 free gigs to make up for 16gb entry level.

16GB is fine for those that don't store music and apps. My Dad has a 16GB iPhone with tons of space. He doesn't download many apps, doesn't listen to music, takes a handful of photos.

He uses his phone, primarily as a phone.

At that point, why even get an iPhone?

I'm not worried about the 16gb as I always get 64gb. I want the rose gold so bad. I'm already paying $3.99 for iCloud storage and still have 189gb left over with 3 iPhones and iPads connected. I just buy a $50 iTunes card and use that for payment and what's left I buy my daughter the games she want on her iPhone and iPad.

Now that apple just announced their installment plan for the iPhones. My 2 year contract will be ending soon with AT&T and I'm wondering if I could just do the installment with Apple and not go through the upgrade process with AT&T. To my understanding, I can just place the SIM card in iPhone 6s and continue using my plan. Would anybody know if this would work? Also will my bill be cheaper now that I'm not going through a subsidized plan with AT&T? Also note that I still have unlimited data and need to make sure this doesn't affect that as well.

The 16gb entry level iPhone is a marketing strategy to upsell you on the 64 or 128 gigabyte models. It only costs Apple an additional $10 to increase the storage capacity from 16 to 64 gigabytes, but you pay $100 more.

because its simple to use and adapts to others in the family who use iOS. a lot of people use a phone for a phone its built into the name iPHONE.
were a small percentage who actually care about this stuff. you gotta think outside the box.

Will the current 6+ cases work with the 6s+? I have over 10 cases that I hate to throw away.

I was wondering the same thing with my verizon unlimited data plan. During the process they talked about choosing your carrier tho so I feel like it may still link to your account??

You folks noticed the weight increase of the 6s and 6s+? Uncharacteristic of Apple to make their devices larger and heavier. I think the only other time this happened was with the first retina iPad.
