  • 'Steve Jobs: Man in the Machine' Documentary Debuts Online and in 65 Theaters

Heavily criticized and controversial documentary ‘Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine’ premiered today on multiple online platforms and in limited theaters. Ever since it first debuted at SXSW six months ago in March, many Apple executives criticized Alex Gibney’s documentary. Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, even went as far as saying the film was ”an inaccurate and mean-spirited view of my friend [and] not a reflection of the Steve I knew.”

According to Deadline, only 65 theaters will be screening the film this weekend including in major cities New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. More theaters may get the film in the upcoming weeks, but the documentary will be on a limited run. As for online platforms, Vudu, Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, PlayStation, and Windows Stores will have the film for those who are interested in watching it at home.

Although many Apple execs said the film was a false portrayal of Jobs, Gibney felt otherwise as he sat down with Re/code back in March and claimed he was very self-absorbed and over-demanding.

There’s been a lot of hagiography of Steve. I don’t think that does justice to the man. So hopefully [people will] see it in that context. I’m appalled, really, by his cruelty, and his inability to get outside himself, and to see himself and his company in a broader perspective.
