  • Mozilla Soft Launches iOS Firefox Web Browser in New Zealand, Coming to Everyone Else Later This Year

Mozilla announced on Thursday that it has soft launched its first public preview of the Mozilla Firefox Web browser for iOS in the New Zealand App Store. Firefox has been teasing its Web browser on the iOS platform for months, so today's announcement is pretty big news for the die-hard Firefox fans out there that feel like they've been waiting forever for this day to come.

Above, you can see what the public preview of Mozilla Firefox for iOS looks like in all of its luster. The overall design looks much like the desktop version of the application, including the curvy tabs, bold-buttoned design, and color usage.

In some additional screenshots, Mozilla shows off what intelligent search results, open Web site tabs, and the in-app settings look like.

For now, the application has only been soft-launched in New Zealand, where Mozilla hopes they can collect feedback on the preview features so that they can improve on them before a full public launch worldwide. Mozilla notes that the application will be available to everyone else "later this year" as a free download in the iOS App Store:

If you're like me and not living in NZ but still want to try out the app right away, here's how:

      1. You'll need to create a new iTunes account so register for a new email address (gmail, outlook, whatever).
      2. Open iTunes on your computer and make sure you logoff of any of your current accounts (top right corner).
      3. Then go to the main App Store page in iTunes and scroll all the way to the bottom right. You should see a round flag representing the country your main account is associated with. Click on it.
      4. On the next page, find the New Zealand flag and click on it. You'll be switched to the New Zealand App Store.
      5. Once there, search for Firefox, find the right one (from Mozilla) and click Get.
      6. At this point, it's going to ask you to login. Click on the sign up button to create a new account.
      7. That's where you're gonna have to use the email address you registered on step 1. You can use any dummy billing address you want, as long as it's a valid NZ one. I personally used NZ's parliament address and the Prime Minister's name :P
      8. Once you've completed sign up through email verification, you'll be able to go back to iTunes and actually get the Firefox app (unfortunately, it doesn't pickup where you left off. you have to search for the app again.).
      9. All you have to do then is sync your iDevice with iTunes and you're gonna get your Firefox app.
      10. (Optionally) Logoff, switch back to your local country's App Store and log back in with your regular account.

The only drawback to this procedure is that you have to switch accounts everytime you want to update the app as it's not gonna do it automatically for an app "purchased" through a different account than the one you're currently logged in to. However, it's gonna still show you in App Store on your iDevice that an update is available.

This is totally jailbreak-free by the way

PS: From my short test drive, I think the app is awesome! So happy to finally have access to my sync'd bookmarks and history plus it has all the features I love from Chrome on iOS.

I quit using Firefox once they ousted the creator of the technology for his personal views on the definition of marriage. No thank you-I won't support that type of hypocrisy and censorship.
