  • CEO of Daimler Says He's Open to "Different Types" of Cooperation with Apple and Google

The CEO of Daimler recently mentioned that the company is open to “different types” of cooperation with Apple and Google with the understanding that the technology these tech giants can bring to the table could be essential to future cars. Dieter Zetsche told Deutsche Unternehmerboerse that “many things are conceivable.” When asked about the tech giants wanting to provide system software for the vehicles, Zetsche remarked that the opportunity “can be interesting for both sides.”

He added that one options for the company might be a joint venture with the cautionary comments stating that everything is “purely theoretical,” clarifying that the company won’t let itself be reduced to a manufacturer of Apple and Google vehicles. He concluded by saying the following:

We don't want to become contractors who have no direct content with customers any more and supply hardware to third parties.
We all know that both Apple and Google seem to already have a minor presence in the automotive industry with CarPlay and Android Auto. That being said, both are believed to be working on larger projects, much of which remain a mystery. Furthermore, both tech giants as well as traditional car companies are said to be exploring the notion of self-driving vehicles. We’ll have to see what ends up coming but it seems like there is a big tech movement coming to the automotive industry in the near future.
