  • New Apple TV Now Expected September 9th

The moment of truth is drawing near (again). Of course, we've all heard rumors before to no avail that Apple is about to refresh its Apple TV. But this time, it's actually happening.

These days, you will be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard from their sources that Apple is about to update its set-top box. And based on the latest informed chatter, that unveiling will come September 9th when Apple also shows off its next-gen iPhone.

On Thursday, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster told investors to expect the Apple TV refresh to be unveiled at the September event. But there could be more than just new hardware.

"Munster said there is just a 50 percent chance that Apple will launch its live streaming video offering in the September event," Mark Meadows of Benzinga says. "But, when it does, that video offering will likely include the major network channels alongside certain cable offerings like ESPN, AMC, TNT and TBS. This would put Apple in direct competition with DISH Network Corp's Sling, which launched earlier this year."

What else might come with a new Apple TV? A new Apple TV App Store.

    Stay tuned.

Connect to these channels though is interesting but not really anything different from what exist currently and not much of a refresh, but if you can add USB drive to the Apple TV and make it a DVR that is when it is more of a game changer.

Currently my money is going to Tivo Roamio, able to stream live tv and recordings to tablets/phones.

FireTv is so much better. I can access all movies, music etc from my NAS and it runs Kodi(XBMC) very well without having to root it! Try doing that with ATV

Not really different? You can't connect to those channels using the Apple TV at all currently. They are talking about a standalone subscription service, in which you don't have to login using your DirecTV or Comcast account in order to get it. You could have no dish or cable account, and pay a smaller amount per month and get just the channels you want. That is completely different from what exists currently.

Will not buy one until we can play gaming apps on it. Come on Apple this is a no brainer by now. Pack these things with a game controller already. Nvidia Shield TV ftw right now. Love it! And it's worth every damn penny.
