  • Oxeye and Mojang Set to Release Cobalt, A Multiplayer Platformer for the Mac in October

Indie studio Oxeye and Minecraft creators, Mojang, are set to jointly develop Cobalt, a long-standing multiplayer action platformer which is set to drop on the Mac this October alongside a release on the Xbox and PC. Originally announced in 2011, Cobalt’s release date was recently revealed in advance of this week’s Gamescom trade show in Germany. Microsoft Studios is set to publish the game after it acquired collaborator Mojang for $2.5 billion last November.

In the game, users play a cyborg that engages in 2D multiplayer battles that involve extreme slow-motion and combat rolls. When it comes to Cobalt, gamers can choose from one of six different multiplayer modes including death match, capture the flag and team strike, each of which supports eight players. More standard co-op modes are also said to be available. The content includes more than 30 maps over 36 types of weapons, customizable avatars and new gameplay elements like auto-slow-motion rideable enemies, and tamable space hamsters. The developers will allow support for custom maps and provide a map editor that will be available for both desktop platforms as well.

If you’re very excited about the game, you can download and play what Oxeye refers to as a “remarkably dated alpha” from the game’s official website (just hit the source link below).
