  • Apple Rumored to be Signing a New Lease in San Jose, California

A recent report is claiming that Apple recently signed the lease on a nearly 300,000 square foot office and R&D complex in San Jose, California as part of its plans to expand into areas that are surrounding its home base in Cupertino. The Silicon Valley Business Journal is reporting that Apple will take over the 101 Tech Campus at 2325 Orchard Parkway, which is an almost 300,000-square-foot multi-use space with plenty of room for research and development, offices and more.

The 101 Tech Campus, which was purchased by Ellis Partners in 2011 and renovated in 2012 is used to serve as the corporate headquarters of semiconductor manufacturer, Atmel Corp. The renovation created sunlit open workspaces and major alterations to outdoor amenities according to the report. The building permits have yet to be filed and it remains unclear as to what Apple plans on doing with the site.

As of right now, Apple already inhabits a small office next to the headquarters of Hewlett-Packard spinoff, Agilent. Previously in May, the Cupertino California company was rumored to be looking for up to 1.5 million square feet of office space in San Jose. At the time, the 101 Tech Campus was on the shortlist of potential candidate sites, another being mixed-use development, Coleman Highline.

Apple appears to be outgrowing its current infrastructure quite fast with booming product sales and record revenues. The company is in the middle of constructing a gigantic 2.8 million square foot flagship campus in Cupertino California dubbed Campus 2 and designed to house 13,000 employees. The second campus is set for completion in summer of 2016 at the earliest but these estimates appear to be optimistic given what happened surrounding the swapping of contractors. In the meantime, Apple has ended up buying commercial real estate in Cupertino, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara.

We’ll have to see if the rumor turns out to be true by waiting for more concrete information.
