  • Apple's World Gallery Wins Five Gold Lions and Grand Prix Award at Cannes Lions

Part of its “Shot on iPhone 6”media blitz, Apple’s World Gallery was recently honored at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity with five Gold Lions and a Grand Prix award in the outdoor category. The World Gallery, which was created in cooperation with Apple PR partner, TBWA\Media Arts Lab, ended up taking several awards at Cannes Lions. More importantly the crowd-sourced campaign’s billboard initiative particularly impressed the jurors.

Juan Carlos Ortiz, the creative chairman ad agency DDB Americas, helped praise the idea of sourcing media from the public sphere when speaking with Fast Company regarding the topic. He claimed that the strategy takes a unique approach as opposed to traditional media strategies which rely more on art contracted from professional photographers. He said the following regarding the matter:

It's not just a great idea, it's a game changer. It's really opening a new way of doing things and changing behavior.
For those of you who didn’t know, World Gallery first showed up online previously in March. Essentially it’s a collection of images taken by iPhone 6 users. Although some of the images were captured by professionals in the field of photography, many were shot by pro-am or amateur users. To continue its efforts in the initiative, Apple added a video section to the mini site earlier this month featuring footage borrowed from iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners once again.

It’s unsurprising to see Apple leading yet another trend in media, this time with its advertising initiatives.
