  • Apple Gives Devs an Update on Confederate Flag Art Ban

It wasn't anyone's imagination. Indeed, apps with Confederate flag imagery began getting yanked by Apple at some point this week. And now Apple is going on the record to confirm as much.

In an exclusive quote provided to BuzzFeed News, an Apple rep is essentially affirming earlier reports that the company is effectively banning games featuring the Confederate flag from its App Store.

Sources close to Apple say the company is working actively with game developers affected by the Confederate flag ban to get their apps back into the App Store as quickly as possible. But in order to do that, developers will need to remove the Confederate flag from their games or replace it with something else.
It should also be noted, however, that this isn't a flat-out universal ban. There are exceptions.

“We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines,” the company rep says. “We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.”

This is sad, but also hilarious. I am not from the US (Canada, eh) but I know that the flag everyone is angry about is the battle flag and not the actual confederate flag. Instead of having a discussion about the complex issue of racism it is much easier to get angry at a piece of linen, and not even the right one. This is a good example of turning a non-issue into a dividing issue. Thoughts?

I completely agree. I understand removing it from state flags and capitol buildings, but removing apps that contain it or taking it off Confederate memorials is just dumb.

Memorializing a movement in the US that was about saying "screw you" to the US is kinda dumb too. Although by people's opinion of the flag, it seems like they would approve having the Nazi flag flown over the old Concentration camps out of "historical respect"

Thanks for censoring others work Apple and for getting caught up in the latest wave of crap in the USA. What a disappointment.
And Spiderman is correct. The Confederate states went through three official flags during the four-year Civil War, but none of them was the battle flag that's at the center of the current controversy.

The first time this flag flew over a state capital since the Civil War was when governor George Wallace wanted to show solidarity with segregation. That being said, if they removed a game for having this flag in a completely historical context that makes no sense.
