  • Apple's Siri Making Accidental 911 Calls Due to Social Media Prank

A new report claims that there were a string of Siri-based 911 calls made over the weekend in Canadian city of Regina, Saskatchewan and it was likely due to a social media prank. Apparently on Sunday alone, there were a total of 114 emergency hang-up calls in a short 2-hour time frame according to CBC. Police are saying that there is a meme going around on social media sites Facebook and Twitter and could be the reason behind these ‘accidental’ 911 calls.

For those who haven’t checked Twitter and Facebook, the meme asks people to tell Siri ‘911,’ which refers to the September 11th terrorist attack incident that happened 14 years ago in 2001. The Apple virtual assistant then interprets the message as having to dial 911 and people would hang up after the call goes out. As we all know, this is something extremely serious and not something that can be joked around about. Workers at 911 services are required to dial back even on hang-ups to make sure that everything is okay.

This could end up taking away time from workers to actually pick up on an emergency call. We would like to think that no adults were involved in any of these incidents, but sometimes you never know.

The only thing funnier than tying up a 911 line is using 9-11 as the bait/punchline. And then maybe killing a lab retriever puppy.

Ironically the age of Smart phones means 97% of smart phone users are less intelligent run their own phone!
