  • Future iPhone Without Home Button Now Seen as Being Inevitable

It's a rumor that we've been hearing and reporting about for years. "Soon," knowledgeable sources have been saying since at least 2010, the iPhone's home button will be a thing of the past.

Now, if you're expecting a virtual home button to land on iPhone 7 this fall, you'll likely be disappointed. Although this significant hardware change is all but surely coming, we now know that 2017 is the most likely timeframe for launch.

On Monday morning, Digitimes noted that Apple is developing touch and "display driver integration (TDDI) single-chip solutions" for its iDevices. Citing sources in Taiwan's IC design industry, the report says that the TDDI single-chip solutions "will also come with integrated fingerprint sensors."

All told, the solutions will accommodate the ultra-slim and narrow form factor of iPhones and iPads without causing Apple to sacrifice its penchant for shrinking its tech in return for implementing a virtual home button.

Please no, It's so important to have physical buttons in case things go wrong.

I certainly agree. The home+power button reset is a life saver.

I can see this happening now. With their Force Touch tech they can still have all the function of a physical button without the actual physical button, and they can still embed a Touch Id sensor under the home "button" area.

One less mechanical piece that can break down and also bring down production cost is always welcome, but I have to admit I still like the physical button. I can pull my phone from my pocket, finding the home button in the process, and have the lock screen opened with Touch Id before I even have the phone up to look at. With a virtual button that will be more difficult. Also, the Force Touch button will never be as easy to use as a real button.

I'm sure there will always be the sleep-wake button, so as long as they enable a way to still use that with or withour volume buttons for a hard reset you should be fine. They definitely shouldn't think of taking away those buttons.

The ONLY thing the physical home button is good for is a force restart. I loath having to push it down for anything and don't thanks to a few select tweaks.

BlackBerry Z10 operates great without a designated Home buttom.

You don't know that and some people who are known to leak early information are/were saying otherwise.
