  • Apple Watch 2 Rumored to Gain FaceTime Camera, Wi-Fi Improvements, & New Models

The current generation of the Apple Watch is an iffy investment. It's very dependent on the iPhone and won't be able to run native applications until the release of Watch OS 2 this Fall. Even so, Watch OS 2 still leaves the Apple Watch's Wi-Fi antenna very much so dependent on the iPhone to work how you would expect it to.

A new report Thursday morning from 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman suggests that Apple is working on a next-generation Apple Watch that will be called the Apple Watch 2 with some improvements to the feature set and usability of the device.

Among some of the improvements will be the addition of a FaceTime camera so that the Apple Watch user can make FaceTime calls and take selfies without the need to have their iPhone handy. It would be interesting to see where Apple puts the FaceTime camera, considering that the device is already of a continuous design and most of the face of the Apple Watch is dedicated to the display. One could only guess the camera would add more surface area to the face of the watch.

Moreover, the Wi-Fi technology is rumored to become more independent from the iPhone, allowing the user to join and configure Wi-Fi networks right from the Apple Watch without having needed to be connected to the Wi-Fi network on the iPhone first. These improvements to Wi-Fi are rumored to also make the rumored 'Find My Watch' application possible.

These new hardware upgrades shouldn't affect battery life, which is estimated to hover around what the current-generation Apple Watch already puts out.

What's more is Apple is in the market to create additional models of the Apple Watch around the $1000-$10,000 price range. Apple could experiment with a variety of different metals for the enclosure, as well as some new wrist bands that we have not yet seen.

It should be interesting to see how the next-generation Apple Watch pans out, especially since Apple has still refused to release any sales numbers for its current-generation Apple Watch suggesting that the company is hiding something. Many people just wish that the current Apple Watch wasn't so dependent on the iPhone and that it could process data faster. Hopefully these will be addressed in the next generation along with all of the other mentioned details.

I would like the following: Stand along apps, GPS, Wi-Fi without my iPhone, Water Resistant, Front Facing Camera. More watch band options/colors would be nice as well. Anything beyond the rubber sport bands are way over priced. Those are my tow pennies.

I think a camera is a gimmicky idea that they could leave out. It'll be semlom used and will just junk up the nice clean display they currently have.

If they want to add hardware that will be useful to more people, make it GPS. I would bet anything that sales of the watch would jump considerably with GPS because people who exercise would then have a big reason to buy the watch. My current Garmin GPS watch retailed for $300 new and all it is good for is running tracking and crerating/using workout plans; and it doesn't even have a heart rate monitor built-in (separate chest strap)!

Yes, I know, I'm sure many people will say that is a waste too, but if you run 25+ miles a week and want to do serious training, it's worth it!

If Apple simply added GPS to the sport model and it was as accurate as my Garmin I would quickly drop $400 on it simply because it could be made to do so much more fitness-wise through 3rd party apps and all the other functions would just be icing on the cake.

Standalone apps are coming as a software update, wifi already works without iPhone (it just copies authentication settings from it) and it's already water resistant, so you're halfway there!
