  • Amazon Begins Pre-order for Next Generation Kindle Paperwhite

Preorders for Amazonís next generation Kindle Paperwhite began on Wednesday. The new edition has been upgraded with an e-ink display thatís sharper and rated at 300 pixels an inch. This display matches the companyís top-of-the-line Kindle Voyage tablet, which now puts the Paperwhite on par with the e-reader. The only difference between the two now is that the Kindle Voyage is able to adjust lighting automatically on each page due to a light sensor and a bezel page-turning control.

As for the Paperwhite, nothing has really changed when it comes to hardware. The e-reader has adjustable lighting, an estimated six week battery life, and a touchscreen interface. On the software side, Paperwhite users are now able to change fonts through Bookerly- which used to be available only for Kindle mobile app users and Kindle Fire tablet users.

Those interested in the new e-reader can expect Amazon to ship it on June 30th, which is only about two weeks away at this point. Prices for the e-reader begin at $119 for a Wi-Fi only model with advertisements to a $209 model that is 3G and ad-free. Would you purchase a Kindle tablet or would you stick with Appleís iPad? I wouldn't buy an iPad, they are overpriced. What I would really like is a Kindle Fire with the ability to switch the screen to eInk for books. I like the paperwhite, but the problem is I also want a headphone jack so that I can use text to speech and audiobooks when I'm driving.

Of course they se an iPad instead of their own tablet for comparison.

And the way they cranked down the screen prightness on the ipad is a perfect example of how blatantly and shamelessly underhanded and devious Amazon is. Thans for reminding me why I will nevr buy anything from you. Ever.

Thank you for the laugh, your post pinged a twelve on the Naive Consumer Scale:

      • Of course they compare this new reader to the iPad. Why? Because that's who they're trying to take market share from.

      • Marketing 101: Don't cannibalize your own product offering. This is literally covered in the first marketing class taught in credible colleges and universities. WHY on earth would you try to steal sales from your own product offering? Sense make does not it do.

      • This is not devious, it's sound business practice that has withstood the test of time.
