  • Apple Set to Depart Ways with Skanska and DPR on Apple Campus 2 Project within 2 Weeks

Apple appears to have cut ties with general contractors Skanska and DPR, which were the two firms responsible for overseeing construction of its new “spaceship” headquarters. According to an internal email seen by the folks over at the Silicon Valley Business Journal, Skanska and DPR who originally won the bid in a joint venture "will transition completely off the project in the next several weeks.” The companies were supposedly “unable to come to an agreement during negotiations for the revised scope of work,” according to Skanska USA Chief Richard Cavallaro.

The news of Skanska and DPR being in trouble originally surfaced last week when a trade magazine ended up reporting that Skanska was set to depart after completing the core and shell of the main building. This move actually ended up setting the Swedish company roughly $800 million in lost revenue.

Although it isn’t an uncommon practice to replace contractors between the various building phases, Apple ended up retaining Rudolph & Sletten for the interior build-out as opposed to going with Skanska, a move which was made in mid-stream and one that is usually unheard of for projects that are the size of Campus 2. This change hints that there are likely larger issues with the operation, which is already more than one year behind and $2 billion over budget. Some are suggesting that the timeline was likely delayed even further, dipping into 2017, though nothing is certain.

What we do know is that Apple originally planned to complete the campus in 2015 but now it’s likely that the occupation will begin in late 2016 instead. According to the Journal, the oversight of Campus 2 will likely fall on the shoulders of Atlanta-based Holder Construction, which is the company that built Apple’s North Carolina datacenter. We’ll have to wait and see.

That's quite an investment... I can't help but to wonder, the think tanks at Apple will do everything in their power to ensure Apple never fail. Just announce that Apple is a religion. LOL. Back to reality. As someone from another post mentioned, the contractors most likely underbid and now they can't fulfill the obligations.
