  • Code in iOS 9 Hints That the Next iPhone Will Gain Big Front-facing Camera Improvements

Hold the phone. Did iOS 9 just spill Apple's secret plans to make the front-facing selfie camera on the next-generation iPhone even better? New code uncovered by iOS developer Hamza Sood appears to reveal so.

Strings of code in iOS 9 have been found that hint at a front-facing camera capable of HD 1080p video recording quality and 240 frames per second slow motion video. The code also reveals that support for a front-facing LED flash and/or display turning white flash (like on the Mac) could also be in the cards, along with panorama support.

Improvements to the iPhone's front-facing camera are definitely warranted. It's one of the things that Samsung keeps on bashing Apple for in its 'buy our smartphone because it's better than Apple's' series of commercials. Current iPhone models only have 720p video recording quality and aren't capable of any slow motion video, panorama photograph, or flash functionality.

Apple always focuses hard on that rear-facing camera, but always leaves the poor front-facing camera to fend for itself with its rather pitiful performance in these relatively harsh competitive environments. It's safe to say that the front-facing camera is one of the weak points on the iPhone that definitely needs the bump.

Apple's next generation iPhone is expected to keep the 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch displays of the current iPhone lineup, although rumors of another 4-inch iPhone have been on and off depending on which analyst you speak to. The next generation iPhone is expected to be announced in the Fall, coinciding with the public release of iOS 9.

How about they concentrate on the shite low light performance for video!

Or fix how the iphone becomes a nice paper weight after each big update...but then I guess no one would buy a new phone every year like they want...

Who cares about the front camera?...honestly? They should focus on low light sensitivity on the back camera and maybe increase the mp count.

That’s literally the point of this update.

I’m not someone who cares, but having a good “selfie cam” is very important to a lot of people apparently. Also, rumors have them bumping to 13mp on the 6s.

It's literally not the point of this update buddy...

Can you really say that after every update your phone works just as good as it did before the update?? No. That's why I'm still on ios 7 which the battery life and everything else lasts for two days with regular use. I have a work phone I updated to last update and thing dies in less then 5 hours with regular use...

Indeed... As if that weren't proof, I just saw that the top trending app in the App Store is some selfie drawing narcissistic piece of ****...

I only use the front camera to take pics of my daughter and I when we are out together. Having more than a 1MP photo would be very welcome for capturing precious moments with my little one.

The whole selling point on iOS 9 is speed and stability. That's why the keynote was so boring this year. It's about time for these improvements. I'm just surprised they're keeping the 4s for iOS 9.

I don't take selfies, but when I'm FaceTiming from my 6 plus to my friend's 6 plus, i expect superb quality, yet to date that hasn't been the case. This is a welcome update to the iPhone and iPad. The iPad should be able to capture front and rear video equal to the screen's resolution.
