  • Gartner: Google's Chromebooks Pick Up Steam with the Education Industry Purchasing Many

After what seemed to be a slow start for laptops that were running Google’s Chrome OS, otherwise known as Chromebooks, the devices have begun to pick up steam with new data pointing towards the education industry representing a sizeable majority of orders. Google and its partners could sell as many as 7.3 million Chromebooks in 2015 according to the folks over at Gartner. Roughly 72% of those will go to the education sector where they are going to compete directly with Apple’s iPad for dollars meant to be spent on technology.

Gartner analyst Isabelle Durand said the following in a release regarding the matter:

Since the first model launched in mid-2011, Google's Chromebook has seen success mainly in the education segment across all regions. In 2014, the education sector purchased 72 percent of Chromebooks in EMEA, 69 percent in Asia/Pacific, and 60 percent in the U.S. (see Table 1).
The low-cost and usually low powered Chromebook haven’t caught on in the enterprise to the same degree. Furthermore, consumers too seem to have largely passed the Chromebooks over. Gartner believes that this trend may change though as the general public warms to the idea of a cloud-centric world. Durand added the following regarding the matter:

The major factors that affect the adoption of Chromebooks by consumers remain the connectivity issue in emerging markets, but also the ability for users to understand and get used to cloud-based applications, and keep content in the cloud and ecosystem.
We’ll have to see how Apple changes its offerings or what the company does to compete in the market as Google’s Chromebook continues to creep up.

I know people who have chromebooks at their schools. Not a single person likes them. They’re entirely useless for many things.
