  • Apple Begins Shipping Gold Apple Watch Editions to Pre-orderers

Apple has started shipping the golden Apple Watch Edition to those that pre-ordered the device.

The Apple Watch Edition is the most expensive of all the Apple Watch offerings, starting at $10,000 and going up as high as $17,000. The case is made from Apple's own strengthened golden alloy in both yellow and rose gold, the display uses Apple's sapphire glass technology for durability, and the heart-rate sensor uses ceramic material instead of composite material.

As noted first by MacRumors, iFixit's Kyle Wiens was among one of the first high profile people to announce that an Apple Watch Edition he ordered was beginning to ship. His credit card was charged, and a tracking number was provided as proof of shipment. He ordered a 38mm Apple Watch Edition with a black Sport strap.

Shipping information reveals that the delivery would take place this weekend. Many others who also ordered the Apple Watch Edition will be in the same boat, if not, they should be receiving theirs some time this week after Memorial Day. Some may have to wait longer depending on their customization.

As the report also notes, Apple e-mails its Apple Watch Edition customers asking them to schedule a delivery time rather than just dropping it off at the buyer's door at a random time of the day. This is to make sure that the device makes it to the proper owner safely and doesn't get swiped by thieves.

I’m surprised. I would’ve figured Edition would be the first ones on the trucks.

If a "regular" joe is wearing an actual "edition" and not the knock offs that have already flooded the market, than by my definition...they have money

Can someone tell me what the point of this is? I mean, in about 3 years when this watch is way outdated and unsupported, what do you do with the watch? Scrap it for spot gold price?

Conventional gold watches make sense... they're supposed to last. But a digital gold watch that's going to be obsolete in less than 4 years? It's going to be either throw it out or get a couple of hundred bucks back in scrap for the gold... pennies on the dollar for the premium you paid.

Some people just have that kind of money to waste I guess.
