  • iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 Will Reportedly Adopt the Font Given to the Apple Watch

Apple has been known to offer some of the most attractive font faces in its operating systems for years. The font used in iOS was the same since the beginning, up until iOS 7, when Apple changed to a much thinner font; likewise, the font used in Mac OS X has been the same up until OS X Yosemite, when Apple changed its font to one that came out better on retina display Macs.

A recent report by 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman suggests that Apple could once again change the font face on its iOS and Mac OS X operating systems with the upcoming iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 releases at WWDC 2015.

The change reportedly updates the font face to match that of the Apple Watch, which means that the font known as San Francisco will be replacing the currently-existing Helvetica Neue fonts.

The San Francisco font has a much more digital-friendly appearance to it, while Helvetica Neue was used to attract the eye with retro-style curves. Some might even say that the San Fransisco font looks more bland, even less beautiful than the existing font, but instead focuses on readability on certain displays. For larger displays, it looks much more compressed and harder to read.

Nonetheless, the font swap will make all Apple device users feel like they are using a uniform font across the various OSes that Apple has, which not only includes iOS and Mac OS X, but also the new Watch OS that Apple maintains.

Do you like the new San Fransisco font, or do you prefer the existing font more? Share in the comments!

I feel like this is change just for the sake of change. It's quite nice as it is. Any design changes are welcome though because it's nearly two years since ios 7 and it will begin to get stale again.

There should be a jailbreak tweak for this. If there is already one, right guys?

There is one, BytaFont 2 is available in Cydia and someone has already ported the font over, but requires the addition of a third-party repo.

I somewhat agree (I love change).. However, we could end up with a disaster after the iOS 7/8 transition and the Yosemite OSX change.. Many people complained about to UI and it is still taking them time to fix and please people. Me, for one, challenge accepted.
