  • Apple Launches New Lightning Dock for iPhone

In addition to Tuesday morning's 5k retina display iMac refresh and 15-inch MacBook Pro with retina display refresh, Apple appears to be launching a new iPhone dock with a Lightning connector for the iPhone 5 and later.

The dock, which resembles Apple's 30-pin iPhone dock in the past, has a very simple design. It has a flat white plastic base with a Lightning connector sticking out of it at a slight angle so that when you dock your iPhone, it stands up at a comfortable viewing angle.

And you can unlock iPhone or use Touch ID without having to remove it from the dock. The iPhone Lightning Dock features an audio line-out port that connects to powered speakers. It supports headphones that include a remote control. And it supports other Lightning accessories, such as the Lightning to USB Cable (included with your iPhone). You can even conduct speakerphone calls with your iPhone in the dock.
The new Lightning dock is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPod touch 5th generation; it can be used for charging your device with an AC adapter and also syncing your device with iTunes.

The back of the new Lightning dock not only has an input port for your Lightning cable, but also an output port for a 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack that can be used for listening to music on your device.

The iPhone Lightning dock doesn't include its own Lightning cable; you have to provide your own. It's available on Apple's Web site at this link for $39.

At least thats a standard that isnt only used by apple

Btw, this one seems better than the previous lightning dock. I mean, it looks like its more case friendly. Ive got one of the older docks and sadly i have to take the case off every time because it dont fit into the hollow.

Good point. I am noting not cradle like feature as was in all other docks that Apple has given us. So yes, looks like cases are welcomed.

I really don't trust that lightning connector to stand up over time without breaking, being the sole weight bearer of this dock.

I am sure the connector will not break from taking on the weight of the phone, I am sure Apple will make that sturdy to handle the weight.
But I am afraid it will ruin contact point on the phone for all other cables, because the pins that makes contact with this gets pushed in over time sitting at an angle like this.

      Does this accommodate an iPad?

Yes that helps. I think it was also so the dock could be universal between the squarer iPhone 5/5s/5c enclosure vs the iPhone 6/6+ enclosure.

Might be too heavy for that, especially since you'll be supporting the entire weight of the iPad on the small lightning connector. I can't imagine it would be too sturdy or would last a long time.

Hmm, I'm thinking that one could easily over-reach for their phone in the night and break this.

I've always wanted a dock, though, and the headphone port is nice - it can be annoying fishing around for the cable and headphones and attaching them in the dark - having a fixed dock with headphones already plugged in could be pretty convenient - at night in bed is the only time and place I use headphones.

I think the way Apple has the phones in stores mounted relies solely on the connector to hold it up, so if it were an issue they would know it.
