  • Apple Reportedly Working on Apple Watch OS Update & 'Find My Watch'

Apple Watch comes with its own operating system known as Watch OS, which integrates seamlessly with the notifications, applications, and features of your iPhone running the iOS operating system. Although Apple releases updates for iOS regularly with improvements to the feature set, security, and stability of the operating system, Apple hasn't yet provided any software updates for the Apple Watch since its launch in April.

A new report Monday morning via 9to5Mac suggests that a Watch OS update is just around the corner with a slew of improvements for Apple's wearable.

The update will not only improve connectivity with other devices, but will give developers the ability to create third-party Watch Face complications for their third-party Apple Watch applications. Moreover, the Apple Watch will gain enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities; it currently has the ability to fetch iMessages over a Wi-Fi connection if your iPhone is out of range, but only if you are using a Wi-Fi network that your iPhone has been on before, as there is no way to manually configure Wi-Fi networks on your Apple Watch at this point in time.

The report also details a new application called Find My Watch, which should work similarly to the already-existing Find My iPhone application. It is suggested that the application will allow for tracking of the device if it is lost, as well as the ability to wipe its storage contents remotely to preserve the user's privacy in case it is picked up by someone else:

First, Apple has been working on a feature dubbed “Find my Watch” for the Apple Watch, which as the name implies will allow a user to track a Watch’s location, as well as lock or remotely wipe it if it is lost or stolen. The premise of the feature is very similar to Find my iPhone for iOS devices and Find my Mac for OS X computers. Apple was developing the feature long before the Watch shipped, but implementing it for an iPhone-dependent device forced the company’s engineers to consider more novel connectivity solutions.
The update would be installed on the Apple Watch via the Apple Watch application on the iPhone the Apple Watch is configured to be used with. From there, just like the iPhone, there is a Settings > General > Software Update section where the update can be installed OTA (over the air).

There is no true indication of when the software update could be released, but speculation pegs a possible date around WWDC 2015.

Maybe by the time I get mine delivered there will be an update ready... It's funny to watch my girl use her watch because on the outside I'm being so patient for my watch, on the inside I'm like "I want it now!"

I've been waiting for this to drop. When my watch finally arrives, I will feel more secure knowing that if i lose it or it gets stolen...i still have some control over it.
