  • Does Windows 10 Perform Better on Apple's New 12-inch MacBook Than OS X Yosemite Does?

Windows on a Mac. It might sound taboo. It might also sound like nails on a chalkboard, but according to a recent blog post by a computer science college student who goes by the name of Alex King, the preview version of the upcoming Windows 10 operating system from Microsoft might actually run better on Apple's new 12-inch MacBook than Apple's own proprietary OS X Yosemite operating system does.

After getting the opportunity to install an insider preview of Windows 10 on his 12-inch MacBook, King notes that it performs well on the fronts of battery life, fluidity, gaming, and even in speed & performance:

Even when I turn Transparency off in OS X, Mission Control isn't completely smooth. Here, even after some Aero Glass transparency has been added in, everything is smooth. It's remarkable, and it makes me believe in the 12-inch MacBook more than ever before.
OS X still wins in battery life, and probably always will, but in terms of gaming, speed, fluidity, and performance, it would appear King had better luck with Windows 10 on the new MacBook.

Apple's OS X operating system isn't as snappy as it once was in the Steve Jobs era; there is often graphical lag on the lower-end machines and various bugs plaguing the operating system's functionality still have yet to be fixed, which illustrates how software optimization has taken the back seat at Apple and creating new features has taken its place.

Although Windows 10 is still in its preview stages, it's still interesting to see that it performs well on several different fronts on Apple's newest machine. King does note that there are some minor issues, such as the lack of Bluetooth driver support in Boot Camp Assistant, but the overall claims of amazing performance of Windows 10 could be well-worth the trade-off if you like to tinker with various operating systems on your machines.

I've been running a Windows 10 VM on my 2015 MBP and must say that I'm very impressed with the OS.

I ran Windows 10 on my 2013 rMBP fora short while to jailbreak. It was much improved over Win8, but I still prefer OS X. My first computer was a Mac back in the early 90's, then switched to Windows in 95. Switched back to Mac in 2004 and will never move back to Windows.

As the saying goes.. "Never Say Never"
Post Mr. Jobs Apple has been releasing buggy softwares for both OSX (Mavericks... pathetic... Yosemite is fairly better but still isn't up to the mark.. especially when it comes to optimizing it for older MBPs) and iOS and they seem to be going down even more every year... whatever happened to the Q&A dept at Apple *sigh*

Thank you for pointing that out. It's something I wanted to mention first and foremost in the post, but I didn't because it would have been off-topic. But yes, Yosemite and many of the other post-Jobs OSes are much buggier than I would prefer on a Mac. They have a lot of issues with optimization, animations, and functionality that I would never have expected from Apple just a few years ago.

"What's the operation speed you are getting on that build of Windows? That's too fast and useful. Slow it down, add more useless cycles and open some backdoors for malware. That last thing we need is a operating system we would have to continually support." -Chief Engineer at Microsoft
