  • Facebook Announces 'Instant Articles' Feature for its iPhone App Users

Facebook is announcing a new feature for its iPhone & iPod touch application on Wednesday known as "Instant Articles." Facebook's main goal in implementing Instant Articles in its mobile application is to try and enhance the user experience for news-reading via the Facebook application by increasing the speed in which it takes to load the article.

The new feature allows Web publishers to create pre-formatted articles that are made specifically for Facebook's mobile application so that when the Facebook user taps on the article, it loads instantaneously. Facebook notes that before Instant Articles, loading third-party stories was one of the slowest features of the Facebook mobile application to date, and that is what Instant Articles aims to solve.

Of course, it requires the cooperation of third-party Web publishers, which might make adoption for the new feature slow and difficult in the beginning. Facebook notes that it gives Web publishers control over tracking, ad impressions, and more through its Instant Articles feature.

Currently, some stories that have been published by The New York Times, BuzzFeed, National Geographic, NBC and The Atlantic are already working with Facebook's Instant Articles feature. The list of supported publications should grow over time; The Guardian, BBC News, Spiegel and Bild will be working with the feature very shortly.

Facebook for iOS is a free download at this App Store link.
