  • Apple 1Q 2015 Market Share in China Sees Growth Despite Smartphone Marketing Shrinking

According to a recent report from IDC, the Chinese smartphone market shrunk by 4% in the first quarter of 2015, making this the first time it has seen a year over year contraction in the past six years. The data shows that 98.8 million smartphone units shipped in the country in the first three months of 2015. Despite the contraction, Apple managed to grow its sales a massive 62.1% year over year. IDC estimates that the Cupertino California company ended up shipping roughly 14.5 million iPhones in China during the quarter, a number which helped the company claim 14.7% of the market share making it the country’s top smartphone vendor.

The success Apple saw in the first quarter was enough to put it ahead of Xiaomi which was estimated to have shipped 13.5 million smartphones in China during the same time period. Huawei came in third with 11.2 units followed by Samsung, which came in at 9.6 million and Lenovo, which came in at 8.2 million rounding out the top five. Out of the top five vendors, Samsung ended up suffering the most, seeing its unit shipments drop 53% year over year in the first quarter. Lenovo ended up seeing a 22.1% drop while all of the other smartphone manufacturers outside of the top five ended up falling 8.3%. Overall, total shipments were down from 103.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Managing director at IDC China, Kitty Fok, had the following to say regarding the matter:

Smartphones are becoming increasingly saturated in China. China is oftentimes thought of as an emerging market but the reality is that the vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones, similar to other mature markets like the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Japan. Just like these markets, convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market.
