  • Elon Musk Welcomes an "Apple Car" and Claims Engineer Poaching Isn't a Threat

During Tesla’s recently quarterly earnings call, the company founder and popular entrepreneur, Elon Musk, said it would be great to see Apple enter the automotive industry as he calmed concerns over Apple’s poaching operations posing a threat to Tesla. Musk’s statement came in a response to an analyst question that inquired about the potential negative effects an “Apple Car” could have on Tesla’s business model. With an unmatched ability to bring new technologies to market successfully and many reports of poaching high-quality engineers, many were concerned that Apple’s interest in electric cards could be a major problem for the electric car manufacturer.

Musk responded by stating the following:

I actually hope Apple gets into the car business, that would be great.
As far as employee poaching goes, Musk said that Tesla isn’t seeing a significant attrition of engineers to Apple. He estimated that over the past 12 months, Tesla ended up wooing about five times as many engineers from Apple then vice versa. Earlier this year, Musk stated that the Cupertino California company was trying “very hard” to poach Tesla engineers for a secret project. In some cases, the company even offered $250,000 signing bonuses and a 60% raise for the opportunity.

For those of you who didn’t already know, Apple is rumored to be working on an automotive initiative that is codenamed “Titan.” The reports earlier this year are claiming hundreds of workers have already been assigned the job. As of right now, the project continues to remain a mystery though speculation points towards Apple working to build a full-fledged electric car. That being said, it’s more likely that Titan is associated with an advanced iteration of CarPlay or a program that enhances Apple Maps with 3D street imagery.

We’ll have to ultimately wait to find out what Apple is really working on but it is pretty surprising to see Musk so calm and cool about the whole situation.
