  • Apple Watch Sport's Ion-X Glass Display Subjected to Scratch Testing

It was only a couple of weeks ago that a scratch test showed just how truly scratch-resistant Apple's sapphire crystal display was against all kinds of abrasive materials -- even a power drill, but it left the question of just how durable the basic Ion-X display from the Apple Watch Sport model would be.

Well-known YouTuber Unbox Therapy has uploaded a new video to YouTube where he puts the new Ion-X display from Apple's Sport edition watch to the test against a key, a knife, and various abrasive papers.

You can watch the results of the video below:

The results are surprising; the glass does very well against key and knife scratching, and even against steel wool, but it takes a pretty big beating from the two versions of sandpaper that are used. Clearly, this is because the Ion-X display isn't as hard as sapphire glass, which right behind diamond, is the second-hardest known material on the planet.

For what it's worth, it will probably be durable enough for most people's everyday lives, but there are going to be scenarios where some will still manage to scratch the Ion-X display. Notably, the Ion-X display is more shatter-resistant than the sapphire glass display due to the more flexible nature of the Ion-X glass.

as for the shattering, he did hit the sapphire with a hammer and it lived.

I have one Sport and one Watch coming. I'm going to keep the Watch and sell the Sport. I'm pretty active and I think the Watch will be a lot more durable.

I'm impressed with ion-x but if I had to get a watch it would be with the sapphire.

I wonder how skewed the pre sales are from people buying multiple watches just to sell them when the demand is high. Seems like every other post I read here about the watches is someone ordered 5 of them so they can sell 4.

you could only get two, and people who ordered more than two were having their orders canceled by Apple.

That doesn't really skew sales at all since it is almost guaranteed those watches will be re-sold and probably immediately. This isn't a scenario where a retail store is buying stock from a 3rd party based on pre-order sales and has an option to return said stock for specific margins if it doesn't get moved.

The only way sales would be skewed would be if you could pre-order without full payment and then never pick up the watch.
