  • Apple's CarPlay to be Incorporated into Porsche Vehicles

Apple’s CarPlay page has been updated recently and apparently Germany's luxury sports car automaker Porsche will be adopting support for Apple’s infotainment system as well, along with all other listed companies. Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned previously that many major car manufacturers want to add Apple’s CarPlay into the vehicles that are being released this year. Other car companies that will be incorporating Apple’s third party infotainment platform include Suzuki, Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda, and now Porsche.

There is no news yet on when exactly the car manufacturers will be adding the system into their vehicles or which models will come with it. However, it has been rumored that cars released this year should have it. Giant tech company Google is trying to release a similar platform to Apple’s CarPlay, called Android Auto but we wonder how successful the system will be compared to Apple’s. It was noted that more and more carmakers are also supporting this platform as well. We guess the two will definitely be competing head-on, we’ll just have to see how it’ll pan out.

Yeah, I remember the mid 2000s when BMW incorporated the iPhone into their informant with iDrive.
Apple refused to play nicely and so my 2014 BMW now relies on unsupported technology. Heck, BMW doesn't even know what the iPhone 6 capabilities are when tethering.

As Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda all have the same owner and are built on the same platform and share the same parts bin, its no surprise that they will all support Apple CarPlay

Considering there are more Android devices out there than Apple, I suspect Android Auto will be far more popular

To be slightly more accurate: Audi/VW share current range platforms in smaller models. The previous platform assembly lines are used to make SEAT and Skoda. The platform sharing runs across the smaller car range as there is are large platform equivalents to Audi in VW, SEAT or Skoda. VW and Porsche also share the base of the Q5 platform(not much else really) for the Macan as they are also in the VAG group, along with Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti. They also own 19.9% of Suzuki. So what VAG have done is form an agreement across several of their of their brands, which makes sense, not solely on a shared platform/parts bin scenario. Not dissimilar to Ford's decision to adopt CarPlay really.
