  • Garmin Launches Two New iOS-Connected Virb Action Cameras

The electronics manufacturer, Garmin, which is best known for its handheld GPS units, appears to be continuing to expand its product line this week. The company recently launched the Virb X and Virb XE, both of which are miniature action cameras that are designed to challenge the market leader, GoPro.

Both the Virb X and XE are smaller than their predecessors and feature a new rectangular shape that makes them more aligned with competitor action cameras. Furthermore, both models are waterproof up to a depth of 50 meters and include an on-board GPS receiver as well as an accelerometer and gyroscope. The communications capabilities include built-in WiFi, ANT+ and Bluetooth. The new cameras can connect to Garmin’s official iOS app to transfer footage via WiFi while users with Bluetooth-enabled can use OBD tools to stream vehicle data such as speed, RPM and throttle position to augment footage.

When it comes to specs, the Virb XE can capture video footage in 1440p at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps with “super slow-mo,” image stabilization and selectable zoom. Advanced users can even go as far as configuring white balance, sharpness, color profiles, exposure bias and ISO. The Virb X drops down to 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps with non-super slow-mo and unspecified zoom options.

Battery life from the removable and rechargeable cell is rated at upto 2 hours. As far as storage goes, the footage is all recorded to a microSD card which users can upgrade to a larger capacity if they wish to. Both the Virb X and XE are set to go on sale this summer for $299.99 and $399.99 respectively. Will any of you be buying either?

Nice. The price seems competitive. I didn't have much experience with the Hero 4 I purchased, and later returned. With that model I experienced lagging when linking the Wifi to my iPhone. I might check one out.

If it's like their other cams, you can control them from some of their health bands too.
