  • Apple Watch Sapphire Crystal Display Undergoes Harsh Scratch Tests

The different models of the Apple Watch are going to come with two different kinds of displays. The basic Apple Watch Sport comes with ion-strengthened glass, just like your iPhones have. The Apple Watch & Apple Watch Edition both come with sapphire crystal displays, which are even stronger. In fact, sapphire crystal is the second hardest known material in the world, right behind diamond.

So with that being said, it raises the question of just how durable the Apple Watch's display will be and how well it will survive against life, especially with it sitting right out in the open on your wrist, rather than safely in your pocket like your iPhone normally would be.

The folks over at iPhonefixed have managed to get their hands on a lone sapphire crystal display off of an Apple Watch. They have published a video on beating the crud out of the sapphire crystal display with hammers, keys, coins, stone walls, rough paper, and even power drills. You can watch the video below to see what exactly happens in that testing via the link below:

It appears the durability of the sapphire glass display is very worthy of praise. It managed to survive everything without a single chip, scratch, or crack.

It would be very interesting to see how the ion-hardened glass display fares against these same tests.

I believe the only reason that it hasn't happened yet is that ion-strengthened glass is more resistant to shattering, which is far more likely from drops than scratches are.

If I was gonna get an apple watch that sapphire display would make me want to upgrade to the steel

Lucky for you, only the steel and gold Apple Watches come with this sapphire crystal glass!

Only the aluminum Sport edition has the ion-hardened glass.

That's one of the reasons I'm getting that one. Well that, plus I want that stainless steel link band.
Having the buttons to resize the band without any tools is going to be fantastic.

There is a black stainless steel option. But it's $1099.

I agree, and that's why I'll just be getting the bare minimum $349 Sport one.

I'm still torn between 38mm and 42mm. Are they supposed to be women/men sizes?

That's the one I wanted but 1100 made me think twice. So I think I'll just go with the all black sport. But I might wait to see how it all turns out instead of jumping on a preorder

Sport has all black it's the regular watch that has stainless steel and space gray stainless steal. But that's a lot more money. The sport is price for your every day person or I guess middle class as you would say. Affordable for most

Edit: forgot the aluminum was anodized space gray
