  • Google Updates Maps App for iOS With Full-screen Maps, Zagat Support, More Improvements

Google has released an updated version of its Google Maps application for the iOS platform dubbed version 4.4.0. The latest version of Google Maps for iOS brings with it a variety of feature improvements that users of the application will be able to take advantage of in order to improve their navigation and exploration experience.

Among the improvements, Google Maps now lets you tap anywhere in a blank space in the map to toggle a new full-screen maps mode, which allows you to do away with the Status Bar, Search Bar, and other details so that you can view a full-screen map only, as shown above.

Additionally, the update makes navigation better for transit users, as new transit line colors appear on the map while you're getting transit directions. Zagat users will find that Google Maps now integrates even better with the service, as you can now filter Zagat results where possible. Moreover, it's now possible to use the mic or type "Directions To" in the search bar for an even faster way to initiate a navigation experience.

The new features aren't the only things that come in this update Google also touts bug fixes that improve the application's stability and reliability. Existing users of Google Maps for iOS will find this update under the Updates tab in the App Store application; those with automatic updates enabled will have it installed automatically. You can also follow this App Store link to download the latest version of Google Maps for free manually.

Are they ever going to bring back POV navigation?? That's what I mostly want. Not sure why they removed it. I guess they wanted to keep that Android only.

Tapping on the compass icon toggles between north-up and POV.

That makes it point the way you're facing and angles it a bit, but not actual POV like traditional GPS devices and Apple Maps.
