  • BlackBerry User Base Tumbles Below 1 Million Across the Pond

Alarming news for BlackBerry across the pond. According to a new report from eMarketer, BlackBerry's user base is crumbling quickly in the U.K.

Of course, it's no secret that BlackBerry has watched its global market share dwindle for several years now against an increasingly competitive smartphone backdrop, but very few industry watchers were prepared for eMarketer's latest estimates this week.

The figures in question suggest that BlackBerry "now has as few as 700,000 users in the UK, with this number expected to fall to 400,000 by 2017."

Just one day removed from IDC's latest data (you can read MMi's coverage here), which confirms that iOS and Android now control better than 96% of the global smartphone OS market, BlackBerry's market share is poised to come under even more pressure as iOS and Android adoption continues at a strong pace.

“BlackBerry’s fall from grace has been spectacular, but these latest figures show that even its previously loyal core seems to be leaving in droves," says Bill Fisher, a U.K. analyst at eMarketer.

Last of a dying breed. And to think, a little bending and they would still be a major player in the game. Kids, you have something to learn from this. Complacency can take you from the top to the bottom real real quick :]
