  • Apple Restores But Restricts Access to a Social Networking App for Marijuana Users

After originally taking a puff, puff, pass on allowing marijuana-themed apps in the App Store, Apple has changed course, at least with regard to where such activities and interests are permissible by law.

The Verge confirmed today that Apple has reversed its former two-week ban on Massroots, a social networking app for weed aficionados. The app was banned because Apple presumably felt it violated its guidelines by being among the apps that "encourage excessive consumption of alcohol or illegal substances."

As of this writing, however, Apple has reinstated the app, but only in the 23 states that have legalized medicinal cannabis.

"A tremendous amount of responsibility has just been placed on MassRoots; we have a duty to show the world that cannabis consumption can be done in a safe and responsible manner in compliance with state laws and federal enforcement guidelines," a recent Massroots blog post is quoted in today's report.

Apple is yet to speak publicly about the matter and likely won't. But the app is back for now in markets where Apple deems it to be appropriate in accordance with state laws.
