  • iPhone Keyboard Maker 'Typo' Ordered to Pay Blackberry $860,000

Blackberry has been involved in a lawsuit with keyboard maker Typo, which is backed by television host and radio personality Ryan Seacrest. Typo had apparently made a keyboard for Apple’s iPhone that looks just like Blackberry’s smartphone keyboard. The company was ordered to pay $860,000 along with attorney costs and fees to the Canadian smartphone maker.

The lawsuit was filed by Blackberry in January of 2014, so it’s been a year already since the lawsuit has been going on. Blackberry claimed that Typo had ‘blatantly copied’ their keyboard. According to Reuters, back in March of last year courts had issued an injunction that prevented Typo from selling the iPhone accessory. However, the company had sold approximately 19,000 keyboards and therefore resulted in yesterday’s fine amount.

Typo has already redesigned the iPhone accessory so the court ruling had nothing to do with the company’s new second-generation accessory. Blackberry had apparently requested Typo to pay $2.6 million in fines but the final amount was far from it. According to U.S. District Judge William Orrick,

The amount of sanctions awarded is only a third of what BlackBerry sought and is directly tied to additional revenue that Typo could have expected from its illegal conduct.
