  • Apple Wraps a Mural Around its New Retail Location in Chongqing, China

Just a week after Apple utilized calligraphy to help promote its latest Chinese Apple Retail Store in Hangzhou, the Cupertino California company is looking towards art to hype up its soon to open outlet. Apple did this by wrapping a mural around the new Chongqing location’s iconic glass cylinder entryway. Over the weekend, Apple China helped to install a huge mural which depicts a stylized view of the surrounding metropolis. The store is set to open this upcoming Saturday at 10:00 AM local time.

The mural is created through collaboration by photographer Navid Baraty and artist Yangyang Pan. The piece features a panoramic photo of the city painted over in broad single strokes of color and currently wraps around the store’s cylindrical glass structure. Much like other glass Apple Store monuments, the cylinder houses a spiral staircase which leads down to an underground showroom. It should be noted that the recently painted mural replaces the scaffolding and protective covers which surrounded the structure earlier this month.

For those of you who didn’t already know, Apple’s Chongqing store is the second retail location to feature a work of art prior to its opening. The first one was Apple’s West Lake location in Hangzhou which donned an ancient Chinese poem that was painted by the renowned calligrapher, Wang Dongling. Apple filmed a behind the scenes look at Chongqing’s mural and uploaded the video to its Chinese website. In the short clip both Baraty and Pan described their respective roles in the project which were highlighted by a spirit of collaboration and harmony that seemingly mirrors Apple’s ambitions for the region.

Apple seems to be taking a smart approach to opening its new stores in China. Instead of pressing Western consumer ideologies onto the Chinese customers, the company appears to be looking to meld with and enhance a culture centuries in the making. Apple is currently expected to be opening 25 new stores in mainland China by 2016. Furthermore, retail chief, Angela Ahrendts recently revealed plans to activate five Apple Stores in China before the Chinese New Year on February 19 with the store in Chongqing to be the second to open over the past few weeks.

We’ll have to wait and see how Apple’s retail expansion continues.
