  • Apple Reportedly Exploring New Gesture Controls for the iPad

According to a recently published patent application, future iPads could potentially come with even fewer physical buttons. Apple appears to be evaluating new ways to show contextually relevant information and allow quick access to device controls based on the position of the iPad’s Smart Cover. The application named “Device Input Modes With Corresponding User Interfaces,” details a method by which users could access information on an iPad by only partially opening the Smart Cover. This same action can also cause the tablet to begin watching for specific gestures that could be used to adjust settings on the fly. The application reads the following regarding the matter:

The device's ease of use can be increased by enabling access to certain resources or features without requiring the user to unlock the device.
An example could potentially be folding away the first segment of the Smart Cover which could reveal he latest notification such as the subject and sender of an email message. Furthermore, opening the cover could show an expanded email interface that allows the user to read the message without unlocking the iPad. Gestures can also be designated for use in adjusting device parameters while in the so-called “peek mode.” An example given by Apple is the ability to adjust the devices display brightness by opening the first part of the Smart Cover and swiping laterally across the display. Several other samples were given for features such as locking and unlocking the device, changing screen-modes based on the covers status etc.

All of the technology was put into place ideally by adding additional magnetic sensors to the iPad that correspond with additional magnets in the second and third segments of the Smart Cover. The company also notes that other sensors such as ambient light sensors or even the built-in iSight camera cold be leveraged to determine the Smart Cover’s position.

The invention was credited to Stephen C. Home and original filed on July 19, 2013.

We’ll have to wait to see if Apple ends up utilizing the technology in a future iteration of the iPad.

Seems pretty similar to the galaxy cases imo.
