  • Apple Retail Store Spotlights iPad Keyboards and iOS Game Controllers

With the popularity of Apple’s mobile devices continuing to grow, the company’s hardware ecosystem is following suit. As a result, it appears that Apple has decided to spotlight some of the laptop-style iPad keyboards and iOS gaming controllers at its retail locations. Tech Journalist Harry McCracken recently posted a picture of set of tables devoted to third-party hardware accessories.

With the hardware ecosystem surrounding Apple's mobile devices continuing to grow, the company has chosen to place the spotlight some of the laptop-style iPad keyboards and iOS gaming controllers it offers at its retail locations. What makes the whole display unique is that all of the keyboards that are shown are laptop-style configurations – a setup that allows the iPad to be used like a traditional notebook PC or MacBook.

It should be noted that Apple hasn’t ever offered an accessory similar to this of its own but there appears to be a large market that has sprung up, centered around the touchscreen tablet. In the past, Apple did offer a keyboard and dock, which was solely dedicated to the first-gen iPad, but the company abandoned the idea and instead went with a Bluetooth keyboard that is compatible with Macs, PCs and other devices.

As of right now, there is speculation pointing toward Apple offering its own “convertible” style iPad with a 12-inch model rumored to make its debut this year. To date, most of the rumors have ended up focusing on the iPad itself and not so much on the possible accessories for it.

The iOS-compatible gaming controllers were the other accessories showcased at the Apple Store in San Francisco. These accessories were made possible in 2013 by the release of iOS 7. When they first hit the market, the initial set of controllers were too costly and featured subpar hardware. Over time, with Apple’s introduction of the Made for iPhone initiative, controllers have seen lower prices and better build quality.

What do you think of the accessories? Do you own or plan on purchasing either?

I have a ClamCase Pro for the iPad Mini and a Steelseries Stratus. Both are great. I really don't care for any of the other iPad keyboards.
