  • Facebook Goes to 'Work' in App Store

TechCrunch this morning confirmed that it hit the nail on the head last year when it first reported that Facebook was tinkering with a curious new product that would soon launch on iOS and Android.

Today is the day we will get to see what the social media giant has been working on -- a new platform of sorts called "Facebook at Work." So what is it exactly? Launching in Beta later today, the whole idea behind "Work" is to give businesses an opportunity to create social networks for their own employees. It's all done as a way to create a self-contained Facebook construct of sorts just for select individuals at a particular place of work.

"Employers can create separate log-ins for employees to use with their Work accounts, or users can link these up with their other profiles to access everything in one place," says the report explaining how it all works. Of course, Facebook isn't breaking any molds here. As the tech blogosphere is pointing out in droves today, Facebook is merely following in the footsteps of Yammer, Slack, Convo, and others exploring opportunities for "enterprise social networks.

We'll have more details about the platform as they become available, presumably later today.

It may be because I'm in the military, but what exactly is the benefit of this new "Work". When I first read the thread title I thought it was a FB version of LinkedIn, but after reading the thread in not really sure.

Yeah, like I really want my employer to be linked up to my Facebook account. Yeah, no.
