  • Man Tries Smuggling 94 Apple iPhones into China

Apple iPhones may not be considered an expensive device in the U.S. as there are many options like AT&Tís Next and Verizonís Edge programs to help make the mobile device cheaper. In China however, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices are apparently really expensive. It has been reported by Huffington Post recently that a Chinese man tried smuggling a great amount of iPhones from Hong Kong, where it is much cheaper to mainland China. The number of iPhones the man attempted to smuggle was 94.

The man had apparently taped 94 Apple iPhone devices to his body and was discovered by custom officials because he had a ďweird walking posture, joint stiffness, and muscle tension.Ē Huffington Post noted that a 16GB unlocked iPhone 6 costs consumers approximately $872 in China as opposed to just $649 in the U.S. The device models taped to the man was unclear, but it was reported however that the iPhone suit most likely cost over $50,000.

When the new devices were not yet available in China, Chinese citizens were paying up to $3,000 U.S. for the iPhone 6 Plus in the black market. Previous reports also noted that iPhone 6 devices were being smuggled into China via Twinkie boxes, toothpaste boxes, and more when they weren't available yet. To what extent would you go to for an iPhone? Let us know in the comments below.

What an idiot. Is it illegal to import iPhones from Hong Kong to mainland China?

This makes me wonder, are there no metal detectors being used in Chinese/Hong Kong airports?? What kind of security are they running in those countries?? Scary what they can get onboard and not detected till after they have landed at their destination...

I guess the number one rule of crime is don't look guilty and don't act weird when trying to pull something off. He got greedy. Next time smuggle fewer phones. If there are metal detectors at the airport then this guy is extra stupid.

It is legal to import from HK to China, but you need to pay huge tax (almost equal to the iPhone price)

Chinese/Hong Kong airports? Hong Kong is linked with China (I mean in topography) You just go by land route, so it's not related to airport here. And not everyone should go under metal detector except the staff need you.

There is no Metal detector for humans in Shenzhen's ferry terminal, its only for bags.

yeah... probably illegal because Chinese Iphones don't have standard wi-fi and US broadband for cellular. It all comes down to the great 'Fire-wall' of china, and how the gov't wants to be able to censor nilly willy.

so yeah, they are not usually able to use Standard US models to my knowledge.:
