  • Foxconn's New Display Factory Reportedly Supplying Apple with OLED Display Panels

According to a report from the leading Japanese newspaper, Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Foxconn’s new $2.6 billion factory which is dedicated to building displays exclusively for Apple will supply OLED panels for future iPhones and wearables. Foxconn is reportedly working with Innolux, a company that specializes in touch panels, to put together an ecosystem which will allow it to produce sixth-generation low temperature poly-silicon films. The project as a whole is aimed at entering mass production in 2016 which means if OLED panels were to be used, they’d be released in the following year’s product lineup, not the 2015 lineup.

The sources for the news claim that the OLED displays are designed to be used not only for smartphones but for wearables as well. This suggests that Apple is either considering or has already decided to use OLED panels for future iPhones instead of the LCD displays that have been used in all models up until now. This could also potentially play a role in the upcoming Apple Watch which LG is reportedly currently supplying panels for.

Ultimately we’ll have to wait and see what ends up happening. If the report does turn out to be true, it seems like Apple will be back to heavily relying on Foxconn which is something it was trying to avoid by diversifying and utilizing other suppliers as well.

Hmm, I'm a little worried that a first generation Apple OLED display won't be nearly as beautiful as their 5th(?) gen Retina Display. It took many years to perfect.

Generally that's why Apple waits for a technology (in this case OLED, which has had many years to iron out the kinks) to be mature before attempting to use it in a staple product (like the iPhone).

Happy with Iphone 6 Its my phone until OLED, OLED will increase battery life. to me Apple will not come up with ground breaking tech till then. My wife feels the 6 ( forget plus) is too big so she is with a 5s
