  • McDonald's Reportedly Running an iBeacon Pilot and Increasing Sales

McDonald’s is reportedly testing Bluetooth beacon-based offers in several locations as the fast food giant is piloting a beacon platform dubbed Piper, which works with Apple’s iBeacon framework among other devices. The folks over at Piper recently announced that they are testing its beacon platform in Columbus, Georgia and pushing deals out to users that download the McDonald’s mobile app.

Although the initial pilot is limited to a several locations throughout Columbus, the technology is set to expand to new retail locations after experiencing success with beaming offers to customers during an initial four week test. According to Piper, it experienced 18,000 offer redemptions as the sales of the McChicken “increased 8% and McNuggets increased 7.5% from the previous month.”

For those of you who didn’t know, Piper is one of the many companies that currently runs a beacon network. The company sells both hardware and software solutions to businesses that are looking to utilize and deploy the Bluetooth hardware necessary for beaming location-based offers. Piper, unlike other networks has its own app that acts as a central location for users to access all beacons deployed as part of its network.

Right now, McDonald’s is one of the many businesses testing or deploying Bluetooth beacon hardware in an effort to send proximity-based offers and notifications to passing smartphone users. Data from several reports showed that half of the top 100 retailers in the US are experimenting with the technology as well. This year alone, a total of 30,000 active beacons are to be installed with 80% in retail stores.

We’ll have to see how the technology expands with time and what results the many businesses end up seeing.

It's going to take a lot more than this to get me to purchase anything McDonald's calls food.

I didn't think Lumos had been updated for iOS 8 yet. Is there a beta version that I'm unaware of?

I don't think it's ever gotten an update, but it works perfectly fine.
