  • Apple Wins 2 Awards for its Zorlu Store in Istanbul,Turkey

The 2014 Structural Awards for best Commercial or Retail Structures and the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence has been awarded to Apple’s Zorlu Store located in Istanbul, Turkey. Apparently the building with the ‘finest example of structural engineering design’ gets this award and Apple took it for 2014. The flagship store in Istanbul, Turkey is the one located in the Zorlu shopping center and the store was recognized for its elaborate and minimalist design.

The judges found this to be a supreme example of collaboration between engineer and fabricator to achieve an outstanding, architecturally minimalist structure. The use of single panes of toughened laminated glass to support a lightweight ultra-thin CFRP roof without connections other than structural silicone, takes structural glass technology into a new dimension. A project where only engineering excellence and attention to detail can produce a result of such simplicity and purity of expression.
Zorlu’s Apple Store is glass all around including the ceiling, and has a cubic design with the traditional Apple logo on top. Eckersley O’Callaghan was the engineer for the building and Foster + Partners was the architect. The ironic thing is that the Zorlu Apple Store of 20,000 square feet only opened up this year and already, it has won some awards which is definitely impressive. Istanbul currently has two different stores, one in Zorlu and the other in the Akasya Shopping Mall.
