  • Apple Planning Major Japan-Based R&D Facility

With Apple spending record sums on research and development in 2014, it's not difficult to imagine why Apple may want to expand its R&D facilities to the Asian market, where Apple hopes to gain an even bigger foothold in 2015 and beyond.

According to new details coming to light out of Japan, the iDevice maker is said to be working on building a technical development center in Japan that would effectively serve as a Japan-based R&D center.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo confirmed these plans Tuesday, drawing particular attention toward the jobs that will be created by these efforts.

"Apple has decided it undertake cutting-edge R&D in Japan," Abe was quoted in press outlets today. "It will be formally announced soon." Subsequent comments indicated that the planned facility will be comparable to Apple's largest technical development centers already in Asia.

The facility in question is planned for the city of Yokohama, which is outside Tokyo.
