  • Foxconn's Rumored $2.6B Plant to Reportedly Manufacture Sapphire Screens for the iPhone

A new report from Focus Taiwan is claiming that Foxconn will be making mobile screens for Apple in its new facility located in Central China that reportedly cost $2.6 billion. Bloomberg had also reported on the same thing last week saying that the company had invested in a new plant and will be producing the screen for Apple over the next two years. The screen is supposed to increase the protection and durability of the iPhone and be made with synthetic sapphire crystals. It was noted that Apple had “an urgent request for exclusive capacity” from Foxconn, where they currently house more than 2,000 employees.

A display factory has reportedly been set up in the Henan Province of China, where Foxconn came to an agreement with the Zhengzhou city government. The factory is said to be located on a 133 hectare plot. According to Focus Taiwan,

The new factory is expected to manufacture sapphire displays for the next generation of the Apple devices.
It was also noted in Focus Taiwan that the Cupertino-based company is still looking for a way to use sapphire display screens for their next iPhone and has not yet given up on the plan in doing so. Currently, the latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices as well as the iPad Air 2 use sapphire material on its Touch ID button and camera.

It proves the point that maybe GTAT is right... they expected GTAT to do it for 500million? A Chinese company is going to do it for 5x that. Maybe they were actually strong armed or things changed along the way?

Just like always.. the big guy eats the small guy.

The 2.8B is to manufacture the plant. The GT plant was built for the purpose, sure, but not paid by apple.

Don't do it foxconn, they'll just cancel the order at the last minute or change the screen again and blame you for it and take you to court.
