  • Microsoft Releases New Ad Bashing iPhone's Siri

With the recent success and attention Apple has been receiving, it is no wonder why other companies would take the opportunity to bash the Cupertino-based company. On Friday, Microsoft released an ad comparing Siri on Apple’s iPhone 6 and Cortana on the Nokia Lumia. The video above shows the iPhone 6 next to the Windows-based Lumia 830, and Cortana speaking with Siri. Cortana says to Siri, “hi Siri, looks like you’re in a new phone, congratulations” with Siri responding with “yes, I got bigger” in a very monotone type voice. Immediately you notice the difference in the way the virtual assistants sound, one being very human-like and the other very monotone, almost robotic like.

The commercial then goes on with Cortana asking Siri if she has features like Cortana, with what Siri responds “I just got bigger.” This pokes fun at Apple’s recently released 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Obviously, the commercial is staged as neither of the digital assistants can really carry out a conversation like the one portrayed. It is not surprising that other companies are trying to make fun of Apple, as their products have become one of the more preferred devices in the electronic market. Even so, we’d say this ad released by Microsoft is a very aggressive one in which they are blatantly calling Apple out on their products with no shame.

Meanwhile I'll continue to enjoy my jailbroken iPhone 6 and will never use a phone with windows on it.

Hey Lumia! Are you still crashing? Do you still need to be restarted and re installed?
Can you do anything at all?
No! I am still just Windows
Yeah it happens with Microsoft any day of the year.

You're comment gave me a flash of inspiration. I have no idea what the original tune for this is called, but I'm sure someone will recognize it.

Is your phone still crashing? Can't do anything at all.

Do you need to be restarted? Maybe need to reinstall!

If these problems always plague you ditch that windows. Screw it all.

Switch to iOS at once if you'd like to live at all.

(Yes. I'm aware the only reason this song works is because "all" rhymes with itself.)

Hey did Microsoft ever get to updating internet explorer yet? I don't think they've done any changes to it since windows 94

But I must say that unjailbroken iOS is garbage though. For those who have never jailbroken their device I'm sure it's just fine, but for those who have jailbroken their devices (and have "properly" used the tweaks in Cydia), an unjailbroken device is simply utter garbage.

Apple should release an ad that just says 'hey microsoft, how are the sales going on those Windows phones? not great, oh thats too bad'

I think it's great, Microsoft is basically telling everyone, the only good thing about their phone. I guess if you're the type of person who likes only having a conversation with your mobile device (hey I'm selling pet rocks if your interested) ....... Uuumm you probably should buy that phone.

      Well,
      MS phones do not crash
They do have some cool features
      But
      MS app store sucks
      I hate the UI tiles
      Some of the phones suck

I wouldn't say garbage but more like boring, but true otherwise in my opinion.

Personally, I think Apple has a lot of work to make Siri better. I love my iPhone as much as the next guy, but I use Siri on a daily basis frequently with a Bluetooth headset and Siri is very far from being a flawless assistant. Would be nice to see some major Siri updates.

Siri will never be as powerful as some of these other assistants because Apple has chosen a priority of safeguarding data and info. Period.

Meanwhile, cute little commercial, though. Shame their products aren't strong enough to carry the ads and sell themselves.

      Nope.

There are 3 Chevron gas stations in town and I wanted to know which was cheapest. Neither Siri nor Google Now could answer this straightforward question! I had to download a gas price app to get the answer.

The various assistants have a long way to go and it's not because of hiding data.

I was referring to the examples in the various anti-Siri ads... Apple's choice of not keeping certain data on its servers for the sake of security and privacy will have its effects.

Your (one) example aside, software updates and algorithm tweaks will continue to add functionality, including location-aware content. Apple appears to prefer integrating Siri with services rather than make it a universal search genius and conversationalist. Perhaps increased app integration is on deck - in which case your gas inquiries are feasible.

Can only half agree with you here as yes the tweets are cool etc but for me there were essential apps I needed to run and simply wouldn't! However I would choose iOS over any microshit product!!

I see MS is continuing to use the very outdated Siri voice instead of the current and much better Siri voice, all while NOT using the true Cortana voice and instead using a voice actor to sound much better than the real Cortana. I guess MS is insecure about their features and feel like the cherry-picked feature differences aren't compelling enough on their own to get people to buy.

Also, remember when MS made fun of Apple and Samsung for their ad wars? (well, Samsung's ad war against Apple) Yeah, I remember when they pretended to be all above that sort of thing. I guess they hope nobody else remembers.

      So much fail.

I don't think that's true at all. First, if iOS was so bad Apple wouldn't be selling so well after so long. Just because YOU don't care for it doesn't make it objectively bad. Try to learn the difference.

Second, I haven't seen any jailbreak tweaks that have seemed particularly useful. If what they showcase on their site is any indication, they're either all all visual/presentation type tweaks that don't change the functionality of the phone at all, or they are more minor "nice to have" but not critical or killer functionally. I'm sure there are some specific tweaks that meet specific critical needs for some, but compared with the early days of iOS and jailbreaking it just doesn't provide the widespread value it once did.

This is simply not true. While I certainly do enjoy jailbreaking and have enjoyed jailbreaking since the iPhone 3G, iOS 8 non-jailbroken is a million times better than rooted Android (of which I also have a great deal of intimate experience—been rooting BEFORE it was easy and I certainly did a lot more with it than simple theming) or Windows (never rooted a Windows device, though, but I imagine it's still pretty ******). And if not to the standard of its greatest competition, upon what imaginary standard is iOS 8 non-jailbroken "utter garbage?"
